Breakaway Stars 2011 US National Champions
The Stars Coached by Rick Van Campo defeated the NJ Supreme 2 to 1 in triple Overtime. Shawn Canaven netted the winning goal on a nifty pass from veteran Tom Gallagher. It was a rain soaked low scoring Sunday as both teams played hard for the coveted championship.
Both teams earned their way to the finals with great goaltending and strong defensive play. The NJ Supreme road to the final began as they edged the powerful Leominster Jets 2 to 1. Then took on the Rams, shutting them down 4 to 0 while getting out shot 41 to 13. .
The Rams in the Qtr Finals had rallied from a 5 to 2 deficit, scoring 3 goals in the final 2 minutes to beat the Americans 6 to 5 in overtime.
The Stars defeated the Niagara Falls Canada Knights 3 to 1 and did the same to the Hudson Celtic in the Semi's.
With the final game underway the Supreme scored their only goal early by Tom Ruiz, flipping a shot past Stars Dennis Beaupre. Bryce Erb of NJ continued his stingy ways and had turmed away 25 shots until Stars Nick Johnson stole a pass and blasted the tying goal home three minutes into the 3rd period.
The teams headed into overtime firing 29 shots at each goalie.
For 6 periods Beaupre and Erb were spectacular between the pipes making clutch saves and keeping their teams in the game.
At 7:18 of the 3rd OT Stars Gallagher behind the net set up Shawn Canaven MVP for the winner and capture the 2011 US National Championship.
The Stars finished with 39 shots on Erb and the Supreme 38 on Beaupre.
Steve Zimmerman of NJ was voted MVP and Bryce Erb the MVG. The tournament Leading Scorer was Rams Doug Croteau 6 goals and 5 assists, followed by teammate Bobby Housser 2 goals and 8 assists and Nick Johnson of the Stars 3 goals and 6 assists.
