Montreal RedLite won the 39th US Nationals this past weekend with a 2 to 1 Overtime victory against the defending Champions Leominster Rams. RedLite player coached by Paul Roy dominated the tournament with a fast passing and strong defenseve unit. RedLite in the qtr finals crushed the Americans 7 to 0, in the semi's rolled over the Gr Boston Alliance 5 to 1. The Rams coached by Chris Housser & John Stamas, beat the Elite 4 to 1, & in the semi's edged the Jets 3 to 1. The Final game was an exciting fast paced game, with end to end action. Both teams dominated play during parts of the game. Ram Kevin Lizotte opened the scoring at 7:27 of the 2nd period converting a pass from Bobby Housser. Both Fabio Luango of RedLite & Sandro Grutti made spectacular saves during the entire game each turning away 29 shots. RedLite pressure tied the game at 1 to 1 when Keith Kuczmarsky slammed home a pass from Matt Lebraz at 4:03 of the 3rd & force OT. Just 2 minutes into OT, Rams Tyer Warila took a pass from Bobby Housser grazed the crossbar, RedLite defenseman Carl Ghilarducci picked up the missfire & passed to a streaking Simon Forest who drilled a shot past Grutti and capture the coveted US National Crown. Paul Roy was voted MVP, Steve Kendall of the Rams MVD, and Fabio Luongo MVG. The Rams were formed in the fall of 1975 by Dave Kornik & Chris Housser, designed a special logo and colors next the rostered followed. Over the years the Rams have played in over 200 tournaments, from Prague to Quebec City to Dallas to Las Vegas to NewFoundlamd and up & down the East Coast.In 1976 the Rams won their first tourney's, the US Nationals vs Roslindale 3-2 OT & Internationals vs Team Canada from Niagara Falls, 3 to 2 with 5 seconds left Next won the Atlantic Championships in Bellmawr NJ vs Gloucester NJ 9 to 8 OT....Dave Guitar scored all 3 game winning goals.In 1979 the Rams went on a Ball Hockey / Street Hockey Tour, a bus full of enthusiatic players. The trip was organized with the CBHA and it started in Niagara Falls and ended in Moncton NB. 17 days later. The Rams played 15 games, some of the highlights was a comback victory beating the Ontario Ball Hockey Champions, Oshawa 6 to 5, then a few days later lost to the Canadian Champions, Ottawa in Ottawa 10 to 6, only to beat them a week later 7 to 4 at the Canada Cup in Moncton.....the Tour record was 8 wins 6 losses ( 2 in OT) and 1 tie. Each city put out the welcome mat, had a reception for the team and treated all the players great Details for the next 2 tourns 1980 & 1982 to followSkip to 2012 Bobby Housser tied the Can Am tournament record for assists with 13, held by Jim Connell of the Seahawks ( 1987) & Chris Housser ( 1978 & 81) In 2007 Rams Cody Warila tied the Can Am goal record, also 13, held by Seahawks Bill Abcunas (1980 ) & Chris Housser (1981) The 37th Can Am saw the Leominster Rams beat the NJ Supreme 5 to 1 in a physical, fast paced game. Rams Doug Croteau opened the scoring taking a pin point pass from Cody Warila at the goal crease to give the Rams a 1 to 0 lead with 53 seconds left in the first period. A big turning point came with 4 seconds left in the first, Doug Croteau stole a ball and fed Rams Captain Teddy Reynolds who lifted the feed under the cross bar past Bryce Erb for a 2 to 0 lead. JR Russo ( MVD) made it 3 to 0 with blast off a faceoff win by Bobby Housser (MVP) at 7:35 of the 2nd , then less than a minute later Dan Richard received a goal mouth pass from Dante Suarez to put his team up 4 to 0. The Supreme got on the scoreboard when Billy Sullivan banged in a rebound off a Tommy Ruiz shot. In the 3rd Steve Zimmerman's Supreme team pressed the Rams only to be stopped several times by Sandor Gruitt (MVG) who made some great saves to keep his team in the lead. With just under 4 minutes left Dante Suarez stole a loose ball and launched a slap shot past NJ goalie Erb. Erb was spectacular in goal turning away 32 shots. Bobby Housser tied the Can Am assist record with 13 & led the Tournament with teammate Cody Warila 11 Goals 6 Asssits for 17 PtsThe Leominster Rams crowned 2012 US Nationals Champions with a 4 to 1 win versus the Hudson Celtics Hall of Fame Awards presented 
The Rams scored 2 goals before the mid way point of the 1st period, Veteran Craig Holman (MVD) blasted home a pass from Dante Suarez, a minute later Tim Richard pounced on a Holman rebound and lifted a shot past Celtic goaile Matt Gilcrest. No Scoring in the 2nd period, lots of action the Rams outshooting the Celtics 12 to 9. In the 3rd Dante Suarez scored a shorthanded goal a minute into the period, Lee Philips assisting. With the Celtics pressing hard late in the game & on a power play the Celtics forced Rams goalie Sandro Grutti (MVG) to make several spectacular saves. Rams rookie Tyler Warila scored an empty netter the Rams up 4 to 0, Dan Richard assisted. The Celtics finally got on the board when John Gould knocked in a late rebound. Cody Warila was voted (MVP) and finished with 8 goals and 7 assists, team mate Bobby Housser had 2 goals and 12 assists. Ryan Kilroy of the Celtics was the Leading Scorer in the tourney with 8 goals and 11 assists. Rams netminder Sandro finished the tournament allowing only 3 goals in 4 games. The Leominster Rams coached by Ray Richard captured the with a 4 to 1 victory over Team Primo coached by Frank McNulty. Team Primo beat the Cyclones 7 to 4 in the Qtr Final, in the Semi had a 5 to 2 win over Team Elite. The Rams edged the Hudson Celtics 3 to 2 in the Qtr Finals and then in the Semi nipped the Jets 2 to 1. The Final game a classic, exciting game saw Primo score first with 1:03 left in the first period. Rick Mastropetro (MVP) from Ryan & Sean Ferguson., the top line in the tourney. The Rams tied the game up at 2:49 of the 2nd period, Jeremy Goguen firing home a pass from Mike Colcord. Less than a minute later Rams Bobby Housser made an end to end rush setting up teammate Tim Richard with the go ahead goal. Rams Brian Reynolds scored in the 3rd to make it 3 to 1, from Steve Kendall (MVD). Rams added a empty netter, by vet Joe Russo, Brian Reynolds assisting. Goalies Rick Breau Rams (MVG) and Sandro Grutti, Team Primo were great in goal. Rams outshot Primo in the Game 28 to 12. Ricky Mastroperto was the Leading Scorer with 8 Goals & 12 Assists. Hall of Fame Inductee's were Ian Steveson of the Montreal Flames, Joe & Bruce Murray from the Niagara Falls TVM & Griffins..the 1st Team ever to win an Official Street Hockey tournament in 1972, and Jean Guy Gagon from ASHI & the Leominster Rams. Frank Napieracz also from the Flames was honored too, he was inducted in 1999. 2010 Maple Leaf Cup Results ...Another great year for all the travelling US teams and local Canadian teams at the Maple Leaf Cup tournaments in beautiful Niagara Falls. Over 750 players and 45 teams competed over 3 different weekends. The tournament which began in 1980 saw lots of action, plenty of great games and sportmanship all around. Plus a record setting game in Beaver B finals that went 8 full periods while Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne was the guest of honor dropping the Cadet A Final game ball. Full Summaries and Team Championship pictures will be in the News area. The 1st Women's US Nationals took place this past weekend in Leominster Ma with a field of 7 competitive teams. Liberty from Leominster and coached by Pauline Cormier defeated Stop the Madness from Greater Boston 3 to 0. The games were exciting and full of action Stop the Madness had defeated Lady Ninja's 11 to 2 in the Semi Final & DangleStorm of Athol Ma 3 to 1 in the Quarter Final. Danglestorm a strong favorite edged Liberty 2-1 in Round Robin, but the in the playoffs Liberty defeated RoadRash of Long Is NY 3 to 1 and then in the Semi finals shutdown the #1 seed Peanut Butter & Jelly of Pennsylvannia 2 to 0. The final game was 0 to 0 until 4:43 left in the 3rd period when Lynn Gould let a wrist shot fly from point to beat Liz Conner, Amy Miller assisted. Until this goal Liz Conner had turned aside 26 shots, stonewalling the Liberty offence. Just 40 second later Liberty's Sarah Proctor scored on a rebound, Callie Housser & Jill Powers assisting. Jill Powers sealed the deal with an unassisted goal a minute later and Liberty were crowned Champions. Liz Conners & Lynn Gould were both selected Player of the Game. Team USA Women's GM Mary O Halloran & her staff used this event as a scouting mission for the player selection of Teams USA in 2011 World Championships in Slovakia. Next for the Womens circut are the Internationals August 27- 29 in Niagara Fall Canada. The Gr Boston STARS captured the 2010 US NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS this past weekend with an exciting 2 to 1 Double Overtime win over the Leominster JETS. 16 teams fought for the coveted title, with many close games.
The STARS edged the NJ Supreme in the Semi and Team Primo both by the score of 2 to 1. STARS Peter Walters a veteran Coach of Street Hockey guided his team though all the close games. Dennis Beaupre was outstanding in goal winning the MVG award, stopping 39 shots many spectacular. Bobby Vorse was equal to the task turning aside 37 shots until Pat Maresco (MVP) of the STARS broke the goalie duel with 3:13 left in the 2nd Overtime when he stole a pass at the clearing line and rifled a snap shot past Vorse for the Championship. The the first two goals both in the 1st period were only seperated by 40 seconds. JETS Nick Caponi opened the scoring from Ryan DiBartolomeo & Ryan Pozericki. STARS Maresco tipped in a shot by Cody Kennedy to tie the match, Dave Purcell also assisting. Andrew Hildreth of the JETS was awarded the MVD. Leading Scorers for the US Nationals were Cody Warila of the RAMS with 7 Goals & 4 Assists also tied CYCLONES Doug Croteau with 4 Goals & 7 helpers. |
